If you’ve ever had someone you know go into treatment for addiction, then you likely know that there are different levels of care, but the first thing anyone goes through when they enter treatment is detox. Depending on the type of treatment you enter, there are different benefits to going through detox. For clients that choose inpatient treatment, inpatient treatment vs. detox are two separate things, but there are specific benefits to going through detox as part of an inpatient program.

What is Inpatient Treatment?

Inpatient treatment is a type of addiction treatment that has a person stay at the treatment facility during the length of their treatment plan rather than being able to leave and go home while attending treatment sessions. In a sense, it allows those with an addiction to focus on their recovery in a new environment.

Inpatient treatment is typically reserved for those who have tried other forms of treatment before and either have not had success or have relapsed and continued using. Inpatient treatment can make the difference between a short-term recovery ending in relapse and one lasting.

Inpatient treatment facilities are designed specifically with clients in mind. They feature home-like accommodations in a calm setting, usually set away from the prying eyes of the rest of the world, so that the people getting treatment do not have to worry about anything other than their own recovery. The treatment options are very much the same as those offered in an outpatient program but with more focus on supervision and maintaining client sobriety, as well as some other options and benefits.

There is a constant medical presence during the program to keep clients healthy, particularly during the detox phase, as health issues combined with detox can lead to serious complications.

What Are the Benefits of Inpatient Detox

One of the most important parts of inpatient treatment is the detox process. Inpatient detox is the process of removing a drug from a person’s system. When a person stops using a drug, they enter what is known as withdrawal. Withdrawal can have a wide range of symptoms, such as fever, sweating, nausea, vomiting, mood swings, feinting, tremors, seizures, heart palpitations, itching, depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm. On their own, these types of side effects from withdrawal can be very dangerous. When combined with existing health problems, however, they can be deadly.

Withdrawal is also one of the main reasons that a person relapses. The intense pain and other symptoms combined with strong cravings make it nearly impossible for a person to quit using drugs on their own. Medical staff are present throughout the inpatient detox process to monitor the client and ensure they stay healthy. If needed, they can assist with medication to calm detox symptoms and manage health concerns. Inpatient detox keeps clients safe while allowing them to get rid of the drugs they are using. Once detox is complete, they can move directly on to their treatment plan and start progressing toward a long-term recovery.
