What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

Breaking the Stigma of Addiction

Addiction is one of the most pressing issues in society today. Fortunately, the stigma that used to surround mental health issues, including addiction, has started to fade. This has given rise to a number of new treatment options that can help countless people who are suffering from addiction and substance abuse.

When it comes to addiction treatment, there are a variety of treatment options from which to choose. It’s important if you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, you pick the right course of treatment. Some of the common treatment options available include detoxificationresidential inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, and outpatient programs. Partial hospitalization is the next step down from inpatient treatment, and here at SEE Purpose Treatment Center, we help our clients plan for their continued journey from the moment they arrive at our inpatient program.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

On the spectrum of addiction treatment options, partial hospitalization falls after residential or inpatient treatment. This type of treatment involves a full day’s schedule of addiction treatment but the client returns home at night. Home can either be someone’s personal residence or a sober living home.

Some of the addiction treatment programs that may take place at a partial hospitalization program include group therapy sessions, individual therapy, counseling, and medical interventions. In a sense, partial hospitalization programs offer many of the same treatments provided at an inpatient treatment in Indiana; however, those who are participating in a partial hospitalization program will still retain a certain amount of independence.

What are the Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program?

There are a number of benefits of going to a partial hospitalization program. Some of these benefits include:

Transition: Often, people start at an inpatient program or a residential facility for addiction treatment. Then, once ready for discharge, it is time to transition to the outpatient world. A partial hospitalization program is a nice stepping stone as someone moves from an inpatient program to an outpatient one. In the eyes of many, this is the ideal next step. At a partial hospitalization program, people are not monitored 24 hours per day, seven days per week; however, they are still closely looked after. Life skills training, along with sober living skills, are typically taught at a partial hospitalization program.

Cost: The cost of an inpatient treatment program can be substantial. While insurance can help cover some of the costs of an inpatient program, the financial burden can still be significant. In general, a partial hospitalization program is going to cost less than an inpatient program. This makes the PHP program far more accessible to those who need it most.

Long-Term Treatment: A partial hospitalization program is used to help with long-term treatment. Because it costs less, insurance companies are generally more willing to provide the funds for the program. If you are paying out of pocket for treatment, you may be able to pay for a longer course of treatment at a PHP.

Flexible Schedules: At an inpatient program, people are monitored closely. They do not leave the facility until they are discharged. At a partial hospitalization program, you are welcome to return to your home at night. At a PHP, you get to enjoy the comforts of your home and some “sense of normalcy”, while receiving addiction treatment during the day.
